I ran a local search in ChatGPT from Fayetteville, Arkansas and got an ad for a water heater company that reads “Serving Fullerton, CA & All Orange County, LA & Riverside.” That’s more than 1,400 miles outside its service area. Someone paid for that impression.

Where ChatGPT ads stand

Per a June 2026 report from Shopifreaks, OpenAI is extending ChatGPT ads to small and local businesses such as car washes and dry cleaners. Ads appear in clearly labeled tinted boxes beside or below the answer, not inside it, and OpenAI says ads run on separate systems that can’t influence the answer, which it calls “answer independence.”

February launch Now (as reported)
Who could buy Large brands US businesses of any size
Commitment Reportedly a $200,000 minimum No upfront spending requirement
Buying Not reported Self-service portal
Pricing Not reported Conversion-based pricing being introduced
Secondary coverage. Confirm current terms in OpenAI’s own advertiser documentation before planning spend.

Adoption is still early, and it varies by market. When I asked my BrightonSEO audience how many were using ChatGPT ads, only about one in five raised a hand. I wrote about that in what surprised me about AI search in Europe.

What the misfire tells us

Geo-targeting inside AI-mediated search is still rough. My guess is that it’s hard for these systems to identify the searcher’s location in some contexts. For the advertiser it’s wasted spend. For everyone else it’s a reminder that visibility isn’t the same as reaching the right audience. That matters a lot locally, where proximity is the first thing AI answer engines weigh in organic results.

Practical takeaways for local advertisers

  1. Start small and watch location reports. Check where impressions and clicks actually come from before scaling.
  2. Keep organic and paid separate in your measurement. Answer independence means paid placement doesn’t buy you a better organic answer. Measure each against real leads, as I argued in the AI search attribution problem.
  3. Don’t pause the organic work. Ads sit next to the recommendation; they don’t replace earning it with ratings, proximity and trust. Start with the local playbook and published pricing.
